Recently, the Habitat Works team came together for an exciting company away day — the first time we have managed to get the entire team together in one place!
The day provided a great opportunity to reflect on the last year, discuss the continued growth of the business and look ahead to future projects and opportunities. Bringing together colleagues from across the company also created valuable time for collaboration, knowledge sharing and team discussion, with presentations delivered across a range of areas within the business.
As an ecological consultancy and environmental contracting company, much of our work takes place in remote and challenging locations. From rural development sites and habitat creation projects to ecological surveys in difficult terrain, safe access and field competency are an important part of the work we deliver. With this in mind, the away day also included a practical focus on off-road driving skills.
Hosted by the team at Land Rover Experience Yorkshire, the off-road driving sessions gave the team the opportunity to refresh existing skills and further develop confidence when operating vehicles in challenging environments. Many ecological surveys and environmental contracting projects require access across uneven ground, muddy tracks, steep gradients and remote rural locations, often while carrying specialist equipment and working within tight seasonal survey windows. Having the knowledge and confidence to safely navigate these conditions is therefore an important part of our work.
The team experienced a range of driving scenarios with a focus on vehicle control, hazard awareness and decision making in difficult terrain. We navigated steep inclines and descents, uneven surfaces, deep ruts, water crossings and low-grip conditions, alongside understanding vehicle capability and the importance of route assessment before entering challenging ground conditions.
The day was a great opportunity for team building, with plenty of friendly competition and shared experiences throughout the activities.
Investing in staff development, practical skills and collaborative working is an important part of the culture at Habitat Works, helping ensure we continue to deliver high-quality ecological consultancy and environmental contracting services for our clients across the UK.
